Dear Friends & Supporters,
The transition from summer to autumn means that our programs are in full swing. This monthly update offers a quick snapshot of the ways that we are enhancing the lives of children and youth. We are proud of our long legacy of sustaining innovative programs that offer transformational learning experiences. These opportunities are made possible by our dedicated staff and many community partners. If you would like to see our programs in action, please contact us to arrange a visit. We encourage you to spread the good news about our ongoing positive impact and thank you for serving as a LearningWorks ambassador. Share this newsletter with your friends and family who may be unaware of our vital services. We are grateful for your support in “equipping Maine learners with the confidence and skills to realize their full potential.”

We have had an exciting opening at both Biddeford Primary and Biddeford Intermediate. Kindergarten students are immersed in discovering the season of fall: counting fall objects, reading stories, taking nature walks and creating crafts. First and second graders have been exploring sports science, learning about gravity, motion, balance, force and exertion. Third and fourth graders have formed pirate crews (with names like The Garrggling Waterfalls) to explore density, buoyancy and volume while building “sea-worthy” rafts.

During our opening weeks, Portland students and staff focused on building strong relationships through engaging team-building activities. We kicked off our “Building Communities” unit, giving students opportunities to collaborate, problem-solve, explore, and create. Students are jumping right in, displaying enthusiasm and curiosity each day.
Our new and returning students in Saco are enjoying getting to know each other. They are learning about program expectations by working through a variety of challenges: cup stacking, a blindfold following game, and a STEM rescue game. We have been impressed by their spirit of discovery and teamwork!
In Waterboro, students and staff are focused on getting to know each other, building strong relationships, and creating a positive learning atmosphere. We have opened with solid enrollment and look forward to adding more students as the year progresses.

Service Works has been regularly supporting the Community Roots Farm with preparations for the harvest. Recently, participants picked over 50 pounds of roots and peppers while learning about the benefits of organic farming practices. One participant who had no prior gardening experience has decided to continue volunteering at the farm through the end of the season.

We have also been assisting weekly at APEX Youth Connection’s bike factory, fixing donated bikes or disassembling them for parts. One participant is working with the shop manager to complete a full rehab with parts from the shop. Having his own bike will open up opportunities for him to get out of the house and stay involved in the community. Finally, we continue to support Thriving in Place in Sanford, the Saco Meals Program, and the Biddeford and Sanford Community Gardens.
