Biddeford Afterschool staff are looking forward to starting a new engineering/simple machine units with grades 1-4 and a nature unit with Kindergarten students. Older students are enjoying drama, books, and nutrition clubs and Kindergarten students are participating in mindfulness, dance, and beading clubs. All students and their families participated in the a recent Lights on Afterschool Family Event where they celebrated the importance of afterschool programs together.
Portland Afterschool welcomed visitors Kate Sykes (District 5 City Council Member), Erin Frati (Director of Maine Afterschool Network), and Jayne Sawtelle (Portland School Board Member) to campuses last week to celebrate Lights on Afterschool. These visitors met with students and shared about their roles and service in our city and state. News Center Maine recently did a feature story on our programs. A new study by the Afterschool Alliance revealed that parents of 91,654 children and youth would like to enroll them in an afterschool program if one was accessible.
Saco Afterschool students have been learning about kangaroos and other animals that live in Australia. They have also been developing literacy skills with a focus on food. They have had the chance to try many new foods like dried seaweed, cherry tomatoes, and green tea.
Waterboro Afterschool have been focused on building a strong sense of community and fostering meaningful connections among students and staff. The program welcomed two new dedicated teachers to the team. They are bringing fresh energy that will help the program grow and thrive.
