Literacy Volunteers-Greater Portland has become part of LearningWorks!

LearningWorks and Literacy Volunteers-Greater Portland merged in November 2009. The tutoring model offered by Literacy Volunteers will strengthen the foundation of learning we make available to those seeking English Language or basic literacy skills.

Phyllis de Fano, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers-Greater Portland, welcomes new tutors and students here at Brackett Street.

After an intensive series of training session, tutors are asked to meet weekly with their student preferably over the course of one year. Phyllis can be reached at lvportland@learningworks.me or at 207-775-0105.

LearningWorks recognizes Volunteer of the Month Anna Makaretz

Anna Makaretz brought warmth and sunshine into LearningWorks during the recent winter months. A Brown University student and Yarmouth resident, most of Anna's volunteer time was devoted to the English Language and Afterschool programs. 

Paul Manoff, the Director of the English Language Program, says he wishes he could clone her and that "there isn't anything asked of her that she is not eager to complete."  Anna is hoping to someday be part of Doctors Without Borders or Teach for America.
