Overview and Position Summary: 

Using a strengths-based, culturally competent approach that is steeped in the principles of restorative justice, the Service Works Assistant Coordinator coaches, supervises, mentors, and motivates youth and young adults who need to fulfill community service obligations due to their behavior at school or in the community. The Coordinator receives and processes community-based referrals from juvenile justice, law enforcement, and school partners; develops and maintains partnerships with referents, area non-profits and community initiatives; and develops and coordinates meaningful and relevant community service projects in which youth will participate under the Coordinator’s guidance.

The Assistant Coordinator supports youth in completing community service opportunities by providing social and emotional support, transportation, training, coaching, and direct supervision.  The Assistant Coordinator also monitors of youths’ plan completion and the effectiveness of the intervention, and keeps key stakeholders of the youths’ progress.

In addition to these responsibilities, the Assistant Coordinator works in tandem with the Director of Service Works to develop and maintain important relationships with community partners and referral sources, including local schools, law enforcement, the Juvenile Court and Juvenile Community Corrections Officers, and non-profit organizations that are end-recipients of SW-led community service projects.

This position is at least 20 (but will not exceed 29) hours per week . Scheduling of hours may depend on project and volunteer requirements, but must ultimately meet program needs. The Assistant Coordinator works under the direction of the Director, assisting to ensure that the program and its associated community projects meet a standard of excellence and all funder expectations.

This position contributes to the accomplishment of the Agency’s mission through the provision of planning and directing the activities of the program in Biddeford and may occasionally require collaboration with all Service Works locations to complete assignments; working directly with students and clients, working with stakeholders, and performing administrative duties such as collecting and tracking of program data and preparing program reports.


  • Completing referral and intake documentation and process with youth and their caregivers, tracking and documenting youth progress and maintaining accurate records
  • Developing and monitoring the implementation of a service plan that addresses the key areas targeted for youth improvement
  • Developing and coordinating restorative community service activities for referred youth
  • Overseeing, coaching, motivating, and assisting youth and students to full participation in restorative community service project
  • Mentoring and engaging youth and students through reflective dialogue about the principles of restorative justice
  • When necessary, working individually on select community service projects when youth cannot be present
  • Maintaining productive and respectful relationships with victims, referred youths’ caregivers
  • Ensuring that all necessary safety and logistical provisions are made with partners and stakeholders in advance of any direct or student/youth involvement in restorative community service projects
  • Preparing timely statistical data for use by the Director for monthly, quarterly, annual and other reports required by the Agency, DOC and School personnel
  • Making effective use of technology to increase the efficiency of the program through the identification of opportunities for automation, participation in the use of databases and assisting staff in their use of these databases
  • Contributing to the development of the Agency strategic plan through assigned duties
  • Contributing to the marketing activities for the program;


Bachelor’s Degree in relevant field is preferred

Associate’s Degree is acceptable

Work Experience & Skills

  • Experience working with teen youth or students in an education, social work, corrections, or other supervisory setting
  • Knowledge of the juvenile justice and education systems, and substance abuse and restorative justice practices is preferred
  • Experience and/or comfort with hands-on, project-based community service activities
  • Comfort communicating with professionals from a wide variety of fields, and acting as a point of contact for community service projects
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and collaboratively as required
  • Highly organized with project management experience required
  • Some experience with landscaping, property maintenance, or tools is desirable
  • Familiarity with OSHA safety requirements
  • Experience working with diverse teams with a range of cultural backgrounds is desirable
  • Experience using smart phone technology and computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Facebook, and map applications
  • Position involves operation of a motor vehicle to conduct Agency business on a frequent basis for purposes such as to transport youth, to travel to appointments and meetings or to run errands – a good driving record is required

Compensation & Benefits:

The hourly rate for this position is $20. This is a half-time, non-benefited role.
