Afterschool Teacher

March 26, 2024 Cumberland & York County

Job Code LWAS-T

Overview and Position Summary:

Our team is seeking energetic, emotionally intelligent, and engaging Afterschool Teachers who believe in the power of education and who are committed to helping children thrive. Part-time School Year positions are currently available at multiple program sites at elementary schools in Southern Maine.

JOB SUMMARY:

LearningWorks Afterschool (LWAS) serves low-performing students in pre-K-grade 3 in Biddeford School Department and grades 2-5 in Portland, Saco, and Waterboro. Students participate in hands-on engineering design challenges that embed literacy, math, and social-emotional learning, to build key skills for school success: academic confidence, taking initiative, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance. LWAS is funded through 21st Century Community Learning Center grants and is offered in partnership with the respective public school districts.

The Afterschool Teacher works 13 hours per week and is responsible for planning and implementing a 4-day/week school year program focused on the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum, and enrichment activities (health/wellness, cultural, social-emotional learning). LWAS team members receive high-quality training in academic instruction, classroom management, and childhood development, so extensive prior experience in education is not required.

Beyond student contact hours, time is allotted to attend meetings, and participate in planning and professional development. This is a part-time, fixed-term school-year position. See locations for school year program dates.
