the mission of YouthBuild USA is to break the cycle of poverty by unleashing the intelligence and positive energy of low-income out-of-school young adults to rebuild their communities and their lives. In YouthBuild programs, low-income young people ages 16 to 24 enroll full-time for about a year, during which time they build affordable housing for homeless and low-income people and work toward their own high school diploma or GED while learning leadership skills and internalizing the ethic of service. LearningWorks reimagines learning through innovative programs that help children, families, and adults realize their potential and build thriving communities. We support 3,000 students in Southern Maine by bolstering elementary students’ academic and social-emotional wellbeing, transforming the lives of teens and young adults, and building the capacity of New Mainers. LearningWorks’ YouthBuild program, known as Youth Building Alternatives (YBA), provides integrated alternative education and occupational skills instruction for unemployed youth who have dropped out of high school. Program components also include life skills and leadership development. YBA is a Department of Labor funded YouthBuild program that utilizes the Construction Plus model. In addition to the construction pathway, we also provide instruction in the culinary arts and hospitality fields, capitalizing on Portland, Maine’s reputation as a vibrant “foodie” community.
