Overview and Position Summary: 

Our team is seeking energetic, emotionally intelligent, and engaging Teaching Site Coordinators who believe in the power of education and who are committed to helping children thrive. Part-time Summer positions are currently available at multiple program sites at elementary and primary schools in Biddeford, Saco, Waterboro, and Portland, Maine.

 

PORTLAND (JOB CODE: LWAS-SUM22-TSC-PTLD)

  • East End Community School, Ocean Avenue Elementary School, or Rowe Elementary School
  • Grades 2 through 5
  • July 5, 2022 – August 15, 2022, and pre-program training sessions in late June/early July
  • Monday – Thursday, 8:00 AM – 12:30 PM or 9:00 AM – 1:30 PM, depending on site

SACO (JOB CODE: LWAS-SUM22-TSC-SACO)

  • Gov. John Fairfield School
  • Grades K through 2

Outside of live program times identified above, additional time is allotted to attend key pre-program planning and staff meetings, and to participate in lesson planning and professional development.

 

JOB SUMMARY: 

LearningWorks Afterschool serves low-performing students in grades Pre-K through 5th in 11 elementary schools in Southern Maine.  Students participate in hands-on engineering design challenges that embed literacy, math, and social emotional learning, to build key skills for school success: academic confidence, taking initiative, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance. Eligible students are identified collaboratively by LearningWorks Afterschool Directors, Site Coordinators, and school staff. LearningWorks Remote Afterschool is funded primarily through 21st Century Community Learning Center grants, and is offered in partnership with the South Portland School Department. 

The Teaching Site Coordinator in the LearningWorks Summer Program is responsible for coordinating and implementing a 4-days/week 6-week program focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) curriculum and enrichment activities (health/wellness, cultural, social-emotional learning). The Teaching Site Coordinator is also responsible for managing daily family/caregiver and student communication, activities, and schedules, and supervising a small site team consisting of teachers and volunteers. This part-time position is a coordinating and teaching role.

While LearningWorks Afterschool intends to provide in-person programming if circumstances allow, the Teaching Site Coordinator delivers a summer program that can pivot between possible remote, hybrid, and in-person scenarios as needed throughout the summer. The dates and duration of implementing these scenarios are subject to change based on public health data from the Maine CDC, and local health and safety data. 

Outside of live program time, additional time is allotted to attend meetings, and participate in planning and professional development. This is a part-time, fixed term summer position.

RESPONSIBILITIES: (essential functions of the job)

  • Collaborate with the LWAS Directors and school administrators/staff in the enrollment and registration process.
  • Manage daily implementation and instruction of an in-person STEAM curriculum and enrichment activities, in alignment with the Learning Framework and guidance from LW Site Directors.
  • Communicate with parents, volunteers, and school administrators/staff regarding student enrollment, schedules, participation, behavior, progress, and to promote program visibility and family events.
  • Assist and support students and team members with troubleshooting technology use, connection and access challenges.
  • Ensure students and team are in a physically and emotionally safe, structured, organized learning environment.
  • Build positive relationships with students and actively support, model, encourage, and inspire them in healthy lifestyle choices (personal, social and academic). Assist with student behavior challenges as needed.
  • Utilize best practices to maintain consistent student attendance and meet grant enrollment and attendance targets.
  • Keep accurate and timely records of: attendance, meal counts, center activities, student records, team meetings, and other database activities as requested by the Director.
  • Assist the LWAS Directors in development of enrichment activities, schedules, and curriculum.
  • Supervise a team consisting of teachers and volunteers.  
  • Lead weekly team meetings to communicate program delivery, needs, reflection, and goals for improvement.
  • Monitor email daily, and communicate and respond in a timely manner with directors, teams, and partners
  • Be available to be contacted by students, families, and team members by phone and email at all times while the program is in session.
  • Assist the LWAS Directors in scheduling and coordinating virtual family and public events, presentations, partner activities, and special guests as needed and required by the grant.

In the Event of a Remote or Hybrid Scenario: 

  • Manage daily implementation and instruction of live, online, and home-based STEAM curriculum and enrichment activities, in alignment with the Remote Learning Framework and guidance from LW Site Directors.
  • Possibly provide supervision of students at a site engaging in the remote program, and following all safety and health guidelines.
  • Coordinate and communicate with transportation and food services regarding pickups and deliveries as needed.
  • Coordinate organization and weekly delivery of STEM materials kits directly to students.
  • Be able and licensed to drive short distances to facilitate deliveries to students and coordination of supplies.
  • Attend and participate in required LWAS virtual staff training.
  • Attend virtual 21st CCLC grant meetings, training, and conferences as required by the LWAS Directors.
  • Stay informed of, follow, implement, and inform teams of all current CDC and local guidelines regarding social distancing, program delivery, and physical and emotional safety for students, teams, and programs.
  • Conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times, in accordance with program expectations, online safety, and remote and in-person learning guidelines.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • State of Maine Teaching Certification, or demonstrated coordination experience and ability in an education setting
  • BA or BS degree in Education or related field

WORK EXPERIENCE + SKILLS

  • Minimum 2 years teaching experience with elementary-aged youth
  • Minimum 1 year supervisory and/or leadership experience
  • Work with diverse communities, ELL students, and low-performing populations (preferred)
  • Very strong communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills
  • Significant experience with, and very strong, thorough, and demonstrated understanding of and ability to use various technology including but not limited to: Microsoft Outlook, Slack, Google Drive Suite, Zoom, Google Sites, See Saw, FlipGrid, Bitmoji Classrooms, internet use and safety, Android platform, TalkingPoints 
  • Some experience with remote/virtual/blended academic program planning and/or delivery
  • Flexibility, thoughtfulness, and the ability to creatively problem solve
  • Growth mindset and a willingness to learn and apply innovative learning platforms and approaches
  • Demonstrated ability to embrace change
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate in a team setting

Hourly Rate: $24.00-$41.00
This is a seasonal, part time non-exempt, regular position.
