Interim Executive Director
Overview and Position Summary:
LearningWorks is seeking applications for a temporary Interim Executive Director position to fill a temporary vacancy to be left by the current Executive Director, Heather Davis, to begin on or around December 15, 2022, while the Board of Directors conducts a search for a permanent Executive Director. This is a full-time, temporary position that is expected to last from 3-6 months.
LearningWorks is an education nonprofit based in Portland, Maine. Our mission is to respond to educational needs in the community by providing tutoring, mentoring, and alternative education opportunities designed to ensure the success of learners whose needs are not met by traditional systems.
In partnership with the Board of Directors, its committees, and the staff, the Interim Executive Director ensures that LearningWorks is successful in achieving its mission and its fundraising and strategic objectives, including the implementation of four free programs for the community:
- LearningWorks Afterschool, a STEM based program for PreK-2nd grade students attending high poverty schools;
- Service Works, a restorative justice program for youth facing behavioral challenges;
- LearningWorks YouthBuild, an alternative high school program that provides integrated academic and vocational training;
- English Language + Literacy Program, a customized tutoring program for adult refugee and immigrant community members
LearningWorks also looks for applicants who embody and support the organization’s mission and core values of community, equity, leadership, learning, perseverance, and racial justice.
Interim Executive Director Position
LearningWorks is accepting proposals to provide consultant and/or interim services for its Interim Executive Director. The project is
expected to last between 3-6 months, and the ideal applicants will have the ability to provide full-time support, with prior experience in non-profit leadership at the Executive Director-level desired.
The Interim Executive Director will work with the Board of Directors and senior leadership to manage operations while the Board of Directors conducts a search for a permanent director. The outgoing Executive Director, Heather Davis, has committed to part-time involvement and can assist with onboarding through December 31, 2022. The Interim Executive Director will report to the Chair of the Board of Directors.
We seek proven executives who have the skill, capacity, and experience to serve in this role. Please provide a brief proposal that includes the following:
- A resume highlighting current and previous experience with nonprofit management;
- Cover letter identifying relevant background experience and interest in the position;
- Three professional references;
- Disclosure of any potential conflicts of interest to accepting an award of a contract with LearningWorks.
If interested, please submit a proposal electronically no later than Friday, November 14, 2022. We then will review proposals and identify candidates for Zoom-based interviews. We expect to make a final hiring decision by November 30, 2022, and we ask that, if selected, you are ready to start no later than December 15, 2022. This position will require candidates to communicate effectively, make decisions, and have in-person contact with key stakeholders, donors, and staff.
