Volunteer Application

  • Which volunteer opportunities interest you?

    Option 1: English Language + Literacy Program Tutor and mentor an adult immigrant or refugee by helping them to learn to read or write in English, and integrate into the larger community:
    • Requires a minimum 6 month commitment (including TEFL certification candidates in need of observation hours).
    • Meet weekly with your student for approximately 1.5 hours per week.
    • Meeting schedules determined between the tutor and his or her student.
    • Tutors can use meeting space at 181 Brackett Street during business hours, or meet with their student at a location of their choice in the community.
    • Training is provided.

    Option 2: Aim High AmeriCorps Help elementary school students who are struggling with reading, math, or social emotional skills to catch up with their peers this summer via one-on-one, small group, and classroom support and mentoring:
    • This opportunity entails service through our Aim High AmeriCorps program.
    • Requires a commitment of approx. 2 months, with a regular, agreed-upon service schedule.
    • Summer-only service is minimum time (more info here).
    • Service occurs at one of 4 local elementary schools (Reiche, East End, Riverton or Saccarappa) during the schools' summer program hours.

    Option 3: LearningWorks Afterschool + Summer Program Help elementary school students who are struggling with reading or math to catch up with their peers by assisting program instructors in an afterschool or summer program:
    • Requires a minimum 2 month commitment.
    • Afterschool programs are held Monday-Thursday, 2PM – 5:30PM during the academic year.
    • Summer programs are held Monday-Thursday 8AM-noon for 5-6 weeks, depending on site.
    • Volunteerism occurs on-site at one of 11 elementary schools (Reiche, East End, Rowe, Talbot, Ocean Ave., Presumpscot, Kaler, Skillin, Biddeford Primary, JFK Memorial Kindergarten Center, and Waterboro Elementary).

    Option 4: LearningWorks Youth Build Assist our academic and workforce development program for young adults by helping its teachers complete administrative tasks and prepare for instruction time.
    • Requires a minimum 3 month commitment (including service learners in need of observation hours).
    • Program is held Monday-Friday, 8AM – 3PM year-round.
    • Volunteerism occurs on-site at at 181 Brackett Street, Portland.

    Option 5: Administrative Support the agency’s operations with behind-the-scenes administrative support. Examples include (but aren’t limited to):
    • Filling in as a front desk receptionist;
    • Lending your photography talents to our 50 Stories Project;
    • Helping the Development team with marketing and communications;
    • Doing clerical work or data entry for a program; or
    • Doing small projects that need to be done around the building.
