Last year, Emily Kosnow saw a local flyer asking for mentors to get involved in their community. After she attended a mentor orientation, she was soon matched with Evelyn Rusagabandi, a woman from Burundi. Evelyn had been enrolled in the LearningWorks’ English Language Program for several months when she was recommended to receive extra support through the mentor program. Evelyn had applied for political asylum and looked forward to the future when she could work and continue building her new life.
Over the past nine months, simply by getting to know one another, Emily has turned into a positive ally for Evelyn and has helped her to identify and accomplish goals. Recently, Evelyn was awarded her work permit and is now able to get a job. Emily has been instrumental in helping her network in the community, locate possible job openings, and polish her resume.
Today, Emily and Evelyn continue to grow Evelyn’s confidence and skill set by volunteering. They regularly come into LearningWorks to support the Back on Track program. The program’s coordinator, Nicole Lloyd exclaims: “These ladies are awesome! Both are so self-sufficient and really good at asking questions.”
